MFT
|
MFT is an early System/360 operating system. It stands for Multiprogramming with a Fixed number of Tasks. It was intended to serve as a stop-gap until MVT became available in 1967. It is an ancient forerunner of z/OS.
Much more recently, MFT is short for Master File Table and is used by NTFS. This is essentially metadata about every file and directory on an NTFS file system, and it includes location, size, permissions, and so on. It's used to aid in minimizing disk fragmentation.
