Lugo is a city in northwestern Spain, the capital of the province of Lugo in the autonomous community of Galicia in Spain.
The municipality had a population of 89,509 in 2002.
The city was founded by Paulus Fabius Maximus and called Lucus Augusti in 13 B.C. on the positioning of a Roman military camp, while the Roman Empire was conquering the North of the Iberian Peninsula.
Situation and features
Located on a site above the Rio Minho and named for the Celtic god Lugus, it is the only city in Spain to be surrounded by completely intact Roman walls, which reach a height of 10 to 15 metres along a 2'1 kms. circuit ringed with 71 towers.
Besides the walls, sights include the cathedral, built between the XIIth and the XVIIIth centuries, and the Museo Provincial, which shows a display of Galician art.
