Lithuanian presidential election, 2004
|
Presidential elections are being held in Lithuania in June 2004. In the first round on June 13, the former President, Valdas Adamkus, led the former Prime Minister Kazimira Prunskiene. Adamkus won Prunskiene in the second round on June 27.
The elections are being held following the impeachment of President Rolandas Paksas, who was elected in January 2003. Paksas was impeached for allegedly leaking classified material, and for giving a Russian businessman citizenship in exchange for financial support. Lithuania's constitutional court has ruled that Paksas cannot seek re-election as president.
The candidates for the presidency are Adamkus, who was President from 1998 to 2003 and who is running as an independent; Prunskiene of the New Democracy and Farmers Union (NDP); Vilije Blinkeviciute of the New Union Party (NS); Petras Austrevicius (independent); and Ceslovas Jursenas of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP).
The election coincided with the 2004 European Parliament election.
