List of U.S. Presidents by genealogical relationship
|
This is a list of United States Presidents who are related to each other by (more or less) direct descent.
- John Adams and John Quincy Adams (Father and son)
- William Henry Harrison and Benjamin Harrison (Grandfather and grandson)
- George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush (Father and son)
There are also less direct relations between US Presidents.
- James Madison: half first cousin twice removed of George Washington
- Zachary Taylor: second cousin of James Madison
- Grover Cleveland: sixth cousin once removed of Ulysses S. Grant
- Theodore Roosevelt: third cousin twice removed of Martin Van Buren
- Franklin Delano Roosevelt: fourth cousin once removed of Ulysses S. Grant, fourth cousin three times removed of Zachary Taylor, fifth cousin of Theodore Roosevelt (although his wife, Eleanor Roosevelt, was a niece of Theodore)
- Harry S. Truman: great-great-great nephew of John Tyler
- Richard Nixon: seventh cousin twice removed of William Howard Taft, eighth cousin once removed of Herbert Hoover
- George H. W. Bush: fifth cousin four times removed of Franklin Pierce, seventh cousin three times removed of Theodore Roosevelt, seventh cousin four times removed of Abraham Lincoln, eleventh cousin once removed of Gerald Ford. Note that these relationships then also apply to George W. Bush, each an additional generation removed.
When we say that George H. W. Bush is seventh cousin four times removed of Abraham Lincoln, this is a much neater way of saying that one of Bush's great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandparents, and one of Lincoln's great-great-great-great-great-great grandparents, were the same person. For further explanation of the 'cousin' relationships, see Cousin chart.
