Lilli Gruber

Dietlinde Gruber (born April 19, 1957, Bozen/Bolzano), normally known as Lilli Gruber, is a former Italian and German television journalist turned politician, and Member of the European Parliament for Central with the Olive Tree, part of the Socialist Group and sits on the European Parliament's Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs.
She is a substitute for the Committee on Foreign Affairs and a member of the Delegation for relations with the Gulf States, including Yemen, Chairwoman.
She has become in 1987 the first woman to present the Italian television news on the early evening, for main national channel Raiuno. Since 1988, she became international political correspondent for RAI, covering events such as the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, war in the former Yugoslavia, the terrorist attacks of September 11, the Iraqi crisis and the war against Iraq.
In April 2004 she resigned from her post with state television channel Rai, where she presented the channel's main evening news programme. She complained that the media influence of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi represented an "unresolved conflict of interest", and that Rai had abandoned its tradition of pluralism and now mostly reflected the government's views. Other than RAI, she has also worked for daily newspaper La Stampa, the 'Io Donna' section of Corriere della Sera, and for magazines Tv Sorrisi e Canzoni and Anna.
In 2004 she was elected to the European Parliament as a member of the Olive Tree ticket. She topped the Olive Tree personal votes in two electoral regions, and beat Mr. Berlusconi's own vote in the Central region.
She is expected to continue her campaign against media monopolies at the European level.
