Languages of Pakistan
|
Urdu is the only official language of Pakistan. English is the lingua franca of the Pakistani elite and most of the government ministries, and is used instead of Urdu among highly educated people.
Many other languages are spoken in Pakistan, including Punjabi (with 50% first-language speakership), Siraiki, Sindhi, Pashtu, Balochi, Hindko, Brahui, Burushaski, Balti, Shina, Khawar, Gujarati, Memoni and other languages with smaller numbers of speakers.
Arabic and Persian are still taught as classical languages to a small, and decreasing, number of students.
See Demographics of Pakistan for a numerical breakdown of language groups.
