Kara-Su
|
Kara-Su (meaning "Black Water") is a valley in southwestern Kyrgyzstan, contained within the Pamir range, in the greater Fergana valley.
The Kara-Su is home to two towns. One, at N 40.71 E 72.89, is divided by a Soviet-era border with Uzbekistan, where it is spelled Korasuv or Kara-Soo. The town reached world prominence with the May 2005 unrest in Uzbekistan in nearby Andijan, following which refugees streamed across this border into Kyrgystan and foreign journalists interviewed them there, since they were not allowed to cross into Uzbekistan.
The other town is known as Kaindy-Kara-Su, at N 51.48 E 64.40.
"Kara-Su" is also the name of a river in Bulgaria, also called the Struma River, that flows into the Aegean Sea.
