KVWB (Channel 21 analog, 23 digital) is an affiliate of WB Network serving the Las Vegas, Nevada market owned and operated by the Sinclair Broadcast Group.
History
KVWB began its existence in the summer of 1984 as KRLR, a fully independent station broadcasting on UHF Channel 21 and Prime Cable Channel 2, which aired strictly music videos for the first year or so. By 1987, KRLR became a regular independent station. After the formation of the UPN television network, the station changed its call sign to KUPN in 1995 and affiliated with the UPN network. In 1997, the Sinclair Broadcast Group acquired KUPN and switched the station's affiliation to WB Network on March 1, 1998. After the acquisition of Prime Cable by Cox Communications, in 1999, the station moved on the cable dial to channel 12, replaced at channel 2 first temporarily by the TV Guide Channel, then by the City of Las Vegas' non-broadcast station KCLV.
(Please note: While the author of this article believes that sometime between Sinclair's purchase and the switch to the WB affiliation, the station had another call sign change and was possibly unaffiliated, he is unable to find any data regarding such an occurrence. Part of the reasoning behind this is the possibility of a gap between KFBT's loss of the WB Network sometime in early 1998 and the adoption of WB Network by KVWB in March of that year. This, however, remains pure speculation without any evidence, based upon an extremely fuzzy memory from seven years ago.)
The station now broadcasts a local newscast, combined with Sinclair Broadcast Group's own "News Central" national broadcast, at 10:00pm. The local news department is shared with co-owned independent station KFBT channel 33, which airs its News Central newscast at 7:00pm.
