John Zephaniah Holwell (1711-1798) was a survivor of the Black Hole of Calcutta. He gained fame for his account of the incident. However, in recent years, his version of the event has been refuted by some historians.
He was born in Dublin, but grew up in London. Became a Doctor and then went to India where he was stationed at Fort William. He was later Governor of Bengal.
