John Langalibalele Dube

John Langalibalele Dube (1871 - 1946) was a South African black leader and activist. He was the first president of the African National Congress between 1912 and 1917 (the ANC was, at this point, called the South African Native National Congress and remained so to 1923).
John Dube was born in Natal to Rev. James Dube, one of the first ordained pastors of the American Zulu Mission. He completed his formal education in Inanda and Adams College, Amanzimtoti. In 1887 he left for the United States of America where he studied at Oberlin College.
In 1901 John Dube established the Zulu Christian Industrial School at Ohlange, near Phoenix and EkuPhakameni. He establishment the Ilanga lase Natal (Sun of Natal), a Zulu/English newspaper.
