Johann August Roebling (June 12, 1806 in Mühlhausen -July 22, 1869) was a German-born civil engineer, educated at the University of Berlin, famous for his bridge design. He established a settlement, called Saxonburg, in Butler County, Pennsylvania (U.S.) in 1831. At his workshop there, he designed his famous "wire cable" that would be used in his bridge designs. He designed several famous bridges, including the Brooklyn Bridge, the Niagara Railway Suspension Bridge and the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge.
His son Washington Roebling continued his work; his great-grandson, Donald Roebling was a noted philanthropist and inventor who devised the amphtrack.
