James A. Gibbons (born January 20, 1951), is an American politician who has been a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives since 1997, representing the 2nd Congressional district of Nevada (map (http://nationalatlas.gov/printable/images/preview/congdist/nv02_109.gif)). The district takes in most of the state outside of Las Vegas, as well as a small sliver of Las Vegas itself.
Born in Sparks, Nevada, Gibbons interrupted his studies at the University of Nevada during the Vietnam War to serve in the United States Air Force (1967-1971). He also attended Southwestern Law School, in Los Angeles, California, and the University of Southern California for post-graduate studies. He is also a graduate of the US Air Force Air Command and Staff College and the Air War College. He joined the Nevada Air Guard in 1975 and served as its Vice Commander from 1990 to 1996, participating in the first Gulf War. During his military career, Gibbons earned nineteen service medals, including the Legion of Merit and Distinguished Flying Cross. In civilian life, he has worked as a lawyer in private practice, an airline pilot for both Western Airlines and Delta Airlines, a hydrologist, and a geologist.
Gibbons served in the Nevada State House of Representatives from 1989 to 1993, during which time he was called to active service in the Gulf War. He was elected to the House in 1996, and serves as Vice-Chairman of the House Resources Committee, as well as on the Armed Services Committee, the Select Committee on Homeland Security, and the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. His wife, Dawn Gibbons, was elected to the Nevada State Assembly in 1998.
Gibbons is running for governor of Nevada in 2006, and his wife is considered the leading candidate to succeed him.
