Jan Švankmajer (4 September 1934 in Prague) is a Czech surrealist artist. His work spans several media. He is better known outside of the Czech Republic for his surrealistic and mindblowing animations and features, which have greatly influenced other artists such as Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam, The Quay Brothers and many others.
Švankmajer has been known for his unique stop-motion technique and his ability to make surreal, nightmarish and yet somehow funny pictures for decades now. He is still doing movies in Prague and will soon be out with his new movie Šílení, which is a horror movie based on Edgar Allan Poe and Marquis De Sade, which has turned up in his work many times.
Švankmajer's trademarks are usually very exagarrated sounds in his movies, often creating a very strange effect in all eating scenes. He often uses very speeded up sequences when people walk and interact. His movies often involves dead objects coming alive and being brung up alive through his stop-motion. Stop-motion features in all of his work.
A lot of his movies kind of has a childish perspective to them, while at the same time having a truly disturbing and often even aggressive nature. This makes his movies very unpredictable.
Today he is one of the most celebrated animators in the world. His best known works are probably the feature films Alice (1988), Faust (1994), Conspiritors of Pleasure (1996) and Otesánek (2000).
