James Sainsbury is the son of Timothy Sainsbury and heir to part of the Sainsbury supermarket chain.
Educated at Oxford University he achieved local notoriety in 1982 in Thame, Oxfordshire when he and a group of his fellow students caused £560 worth of damage to a cafe while staging a live action roleplaying game.
When tried at the Magistrate's Court, he was fined £25.
