Iranian student protests of July, 1999 were among the most violent protests in Iran after the early years of the Islamic Republic.
The protests began on July 9, 1999, after a demonstration against the closing of the Islamic left newspaper Salaam which ended in the student dormitories of University of Tehran. Several hardliners and the police followed the students into the dormitories, destroying everything and physically attacking the students. Street riots started after that, resulting in several arrests and injuries, and at least one death.
