Image talk:Btwashington.jpg

It seems the photo came from the Library of Congress. Can this photo be released under GFDL ? Please read http://lcweb.loc.gov/rr/print/195_copr.html

It's also 72k. 72k!!!!!!!!! and grainy. Delete! -- Tarquin 10:34 Apr 15, 2003 (UTC)

Yes, the original picture came from the LoC. I grabbed it and put it here. I read the link beforehand, which raises the question: Is it public domain? Use a little skull work. B.T. Washington died in 1915. The photo showed a living man. Works older than 1922 can be safely assumed to be public domain, though copying someone else's copy isn't legal. But the LoC doesn't re-copyright. So an image of a man who died in 1915 that came from some U.S. government agency can safely be presumed to be in the public domain so you can do what you want with it. As far as the quality, excuse me. I figured some image would be better than none. Besides, images from the late 19th century aren't going to look as good as photos taken yesterday.

This is a stupid argument and I don't have the energy for it. Delete all my contributions, for all I care. BTW, I write my own stuff, other than the stuff I lift from the 1911 EB or U.S. government web sites. I'm sure you'll question the legality of that stuff, or the quality of it, next. -- Dave Farquhar 21:51 Apr 16, 2003 (UTC)

Dave, both of the versions of this image say they were uploaded by BlackWidow, not you, so I'm confused. The large 72k image I complained about above has now been replaced by a small version. It seems fine to me. As far as I'm concerned, there is no need for argument. :-) -- Tarquin 22:18 Apr 16, 2003 (UTC)

As you can see if you look at the first entry in this Talk page's history, it was first created with comments attributed by Ericd and Tarquin, by Tarquin. And the original photo added in to the Booker T. Washington page was named Image:Booker t. washington.jpg. The obvious conclusion, my dear Watson, would be that it was originally contributed by someone else, then modified and/or moved by BW, and Tarquin then moved some text from Talk:Booker T. Washington to here, as noted on that page. -- John Owens 22:41 Apr 16, 2003 (UTC)

The image I uploaded was Image:Booker t. washington.jpg, from the Library of Congress. I was the original contributor. It got controversial, someone modified it, and got even more controversial. Like I said, if you don't want my stuff, I'll leave. Gladly. -- Dave Farquhar 22:47 Apr 16, 2003 (UTC)

The Library of Congress site has this to say about its photos:

Although the Library cannot grant permission for use of images, it does request that the following credit line be used to assist in identifying images: Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division [reproduction number, e.g., LC-USZ62-110212]. .

Even if there were no question about the photo's copyright status, the above requirement was not done. That is ONE of the reason I deleted the photo. Now, as to the current photo -- since the now-banned Black Widow refused to comply with copyright policy, it is probably a good idea that he (he's really the previously-banned DW, by the way, and has come back in a new incarnation as JoanB) intentionally put the photo here in order to cause trouble. Note that he did not tell us where it came from. It's probably copyrighted as well. -- Zoe
