Sea ice area in square meters, for northern and southern hemispheres.
- Black line is the southern hemisphere sea ice area.
- The Southern Ocean sea ice around Antarctica both covers a larger area than the boreal counterpart and more of it melts during local summer.
- Blue line is the northern hemisphere sea ice area.
- Sea ice around the North Pole melts off surrounding shallow continental shelf areas in the summer, but a larger area of the Arctic Ocean remains ice covered than in the southern hemisphere area.
