Ice Climber (Japanese: アイスクライマー) is a video game for the NES developed by Nintendo and released in 1985. In the game, the players control either Popo (a boy dressed in a blue eskimo suit) or Nana (a girl dressed in a pink eskimo suit). Their challenge is to venture up an ever scrolling mountain in their quest to defeat an evil condor. The enemies they encounter on their way up the mountain include polar bears and seals (seals were in the Japanese version of the game; small yetis, called topis, appeared in their place in the American version). Halfway through the level, enemies disappear and a small bonus portion of the level is available to earn extra points by collecting vegetables. The game can be played in one or two player mode. The latter pits Nana and Popo against each other in the race to the summit.
16 years after the original game, the Ice Climbers returned to appear in Super Smash Bros. Melee for GameCube as playable characters. The two of them were connected as a single character, and both would attack at the same time. They had their own stage to battle on, which was based on the stages from their original game. The enemies would also appear on the stage in certain modes of play. Though the two characters work as a unit, Nana can be defeated without Popo dying - however, the effectiveness of the Ice Climbers' special attacks is halved, and Popo can no longer use Belay when he is alone.
The original Ice Climber game is also available on a new set of e-Reader cards from Nintendo. Ice Climber is one of the playable NES games in the GameCube release Animal Crossing. It was also re-released on the Game Boy Advance as part of the Classic NES Series of games.
