House Baratheon

Baratheon_familytree.jpg
The fictional House Baratheon is the youngest of the great houses in the fantasy book series A Song of Ice and Fire.
In Robert's Rebellion, they claimed the Iron Throne, with the support of House Stark, House Lannister, House Tully, and House Arryn. Their sigil is a crowned black stag on a field of gold, and their words are "Ours is the Fury". The house traces its descent from Orys Baratheon, one of Aegon the Conqueror's fiercest generals and his rumored bastard brother. Through the female line the Baratheons can claim descent of Durran the first Stormking and founder of Stormīs End as Orys married the daughter of Argilac the Arrogant last of the Stormkings.

Robert
The eldest of three sons, Robert Baratheon became lord of Storm's End at his fathers death. He was crowned king of the Seven Kingdoms after winning the War of the Usurper
Robert loves eating, drinking and hunting and has numerous mistresses and bastards, but despises the day-to-day affairs of ruling a kingdom, which he leaves to the King's Hand.
Robert's court
Small council
As of AL 297, Robert's small council consisted of
- Jon Arryn
- King's hand
- Varys
- Master of whispers. Varys had been on King Aerys's council as well, and was pardoned by Robert.
- Petyr Baelish
- Master of coin
- Pycelle
- Grand Maester
- Stannis Baratheon
- Master of ships
Kingsguard
At the time of Robert's coronation, most of the kingsguard of King Aerys II were dead, leaving only Ser Jaime Lannister (who had killed Aerys himself, earning him the title of Kingslayer) and Ser Barristan Selmy, who had fought for Aerys' cause at the Trident, but survived his wounds from arrow, spear, and sword. Robert pardoned both, making Ser Barristan the new Lord Commander, and appointed five new members.
As of AL 297, Robert's kingsguard consisted of
- Barristan Selmy
- Lord Commander
- Jaime Lannister
- Arys Oakheart
- Meryn Trant
- Mandon Moore
- Boros Blount
- Preston Greenfield
It is likely that these were all appointed immediately after the rebellion in AL 283.
Robert Baratheon is killed by a boar at the end of A Game of Thrones, following that his wife's bastard son Joffrey (the child of Queen Cersei Lannister and her brother, Ser Jaime Lannister) takes the throne. His death incites the war that encompasses the entirety of the following two books, the War of the Five Kings, in which his two brothers, Lords Renly and Stannis Baratheon, declare themselves the rightful kings. Robb Stark is also declared King in the North and King of the Trident, and Lord Balon Greyjoy declares himself King of the Iron Islands.
Notable members
Orys
An alleged bastard brother of Aegon the Conqueror, Orys fought for the Targaryen cause in the Wars of Conquest. He slew the last of the Storm Kings, Argilac the Arrogant, for which Aegon raised Orys to the level of lord and gave the Stormlands to him and his descendants. Orys took the daughter of Argilac as wife.
Steffon
Lord Steffon Baratheon, the father of Robert, Stannis, and Renly, perished at sea with his wife, Lady Cassana, in sight of Storm's End, when they returned from the Narrow Sea.
