- Hostess is also the feminine version of the word host.
Hostess is a brand of the Interstate Bakeries Corporation in the United States, famous for the sugary snacks Twinkies, Ding Dongs, HoHos, SuzyQ's, Sno Balls, Donettes, Mini Muffins, and Hostess Fruit Pies.
In 1925, the Taggart Bakery was selling a new brand of white bread called Wonder. The Continental Baking Company purchased Taggart and began selling Wonder Bread nationwide, and invented Hostess Cakes as an additional brand to increase the company's popularity with retail vendors.
The Twinkie was invented for Hostess by Jimmy Dewar in 1930, and became a popular seller during the Great Depression. Its original banana filling was switched to vanilla creme after a banana shortage during World War II.
Interstate Bakeries Corporation purchased the Continental Baking Company in 1995.
In September of 2004 the IBC company filed for bankruptcy.
