Hornblower is the umbrella title of an acclaimed series of television drama programmes loosely based on C. S. Forester's novels about the character Horatio Hornblower, a British naval officer during the Napoleonic Wars.
The series stars Ioan Gruffudd in the title role and is produced by the British broadcaster Meridian Television, and shown on ITV1 in the UK and A&E Television Networks in the U.S. Several other well-known actors have appeared, sometimes in continuing roles. These include David Warner, Paul McGann, Samuel West, Cherie Lunghi, and Robert Lindsay, as Hornblower's superior Admiral Pellew.
Hornblower(slang), also an adjective, is a term commonly used to describe a person with an ego of gargantuan proportions. A person displaying these characteristics will frequently refer to themselves in the third person. When speaking, one will replace "I" with their own name. There are currrently three reconginzed tiers of hornblowing status; novice, amateur and professional. The classification of tiers is based upon the strength and frequency one flaunts his/her ego. The founding father of the "hornblower" and "hornblower" status is Lewis May.
