Homecoming Saga

The Homecoming Saga is a science fiction series by Orson Scott Card. The series is patterned on the Book of Mormon.
The first books in the series are set forty million years in the future on a nearby planet called Harmony. The Earth was rendered uninhabitable by war, and so mankind fled to Harmony. (We later learn that there were seven evacuation colonies, and that mankind actually inhabits a total of 40).
On Harmony, the colonists established the "Oversoul" - a computer to watch over them and encourage them to build a non-violent civilization. It does this through by directly interacting with the thoughts the Humans are having. It prevents them thinking thoughts that would allow them to create destructive weapons - thus, the technology on harmony is an odd mix of medival camel trains and high-tech magnetic lifts.
After forty million years, the Oversoul (which had only been designed to last half of that length of time) is breaking down. It decides to send a group of colonists back to Earth, to seek advice from the 'Keeper of the Earth' for what to do.
