Headlinese
|
Headlinese is nonconversational language used in newspaper headlines.
Because of tight space requirements, copy editors usually must write headlines in a compressed, telegraphic style, frequently omitting grammatical articles like "a" and "the", as well as forms of the verb "to be".
This includes the use of contractions, such as Pols (for "politicians"); Dems (for "Democrats"), GOP (from "Grand Old Party", a nickname for the Republican Party).Template:News-stub
