Hayes is the popular name for Hayes Communications (named after Dennis Hayes, founder), creator of the original self-dialing "smart" modem. It is also often used as a short form when referring to the Hayes command set (named after the company), originally pioneered in Hayes modems.
Hayes is also the name of two places in London, England:
- Hayes in the London Borough of Bromley (south east London)
- Hayes in the London Borough of Hillingdon (north west London)
Hayes (or Hays) is the most common variation of a surname generally derived from various Irish family names, as the anglicization of Irish names introduced many errors and faulty phoenetic spellings. The most common Irish version is O'Hay, although the Irish O'hAodh or O'hAodha also has overlaps with Hughes or Hughs.
