Hardinxveld-Giessendam

Hardinxveld-Giessendam (population: 17,828 in 2004) is a municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The municipality covers an area of 19.35 km² (of which 2.44 km² water).
The municipality of Hardinxveld-Giessendam consists of two villages: Giessendam/Neder-Hardinxveld and Boven-Hardinxveld. Until they were linked together in 1957, Giessendam and Hardinxveld were two villages, consisting of only a few streets and dykes and only a few thousand inhabitants.
The oldest human body ever found in the Netherlands (a woman of 7500 years old), has been dug up in 1997 in this municipality during ground research before placing of the future railroad called Betuweroute, that will cross the country from the west to the German border.
