Harbin Institute of Technology

The Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) is a technical university in the city of Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, China, similar to Virginia Tech or Carnegie Mellon in the United States.

The Harbin Institute of Technology was founded in 1920. It has developed into an important international research university focusing on engineering with supporting faculties in the sciences, management, humanities and the social sciences. Since 1954, when it was named to be one of the first official institutions of higher education in Communist China, the institute has enjoyed government sponsorship. In 1984, it was listed in the top 15 universities receiving financial support. In 1999, the Chinese government chose HIT to be one of nine universities which will merit sufficient support to transform them into world-class places of learning and research.

As of 2004, the institute has 60 specialties, 85 master's degree programs, 57 doctoral degree programs, 15 post-doctoral working stations, and four national bases of basic education, among which are 14 disciplines for master's and doctoral degrees, 18 prominent state disciplines, and 22 important state and provincial labs.

The institute is geared to the needs of the development of China's economy and defense. With a strong emphasis in scientific research (ranked #2 in China), it has surpassed research outlays of 100 million yuan during the past nine years, reaching 516 million yuan in 2001.

Its faculty and students have invented: the first analog computer, the first intelligent chess computer, the first arc welding robot, the first world-class new system radar, the first IC CMOS chip with its own copyright, the first superway computer real-time 3-D image creation system, and the first high-performance computer controlled fiber twister.

HIT was able to complete the Large-Size Vacuum Container Ground Simulation Equipment, an important national scientific research project, in only three years. HIT ranked No. 2 in the 10-year comprehensive evaluation of the state of research projects of the National 863 High-Tech Programs.

As of 2004, it has produced more than 100,000 graduates, many distinguished in their respective fields.

The Teaching Administration Office has been granted the title of “Excellent Teaching Administration Office of National University” twice; and The Graduate School is ranked No. 7 among graduate schools in China. HIT has been granted the National Labor Award.

The institute's main building, Zhu-Lou, is a smaller version of the main building of the University of Moscow, and the majority of the buildings were built during the time of Sino-Soviet friendship from 1949 to 1959 when the Soviets were very active in developing Northeast China.
