Gymea, New South Wales

Gymea is a suburb in Sydney, Australia, and is adjacent to Miranda, Kirrawee, and Grays Point.
It is primarily a residential suburb, and due to its location in the Sutherland Shire and beside Gymea Bay, is very green and bushy, especially besides the bay area. In recent months, invasions of feral deer from the Royal National Park have begun to impact negatively on the ground cover underneath the tree canopy, however.
Gymea Bay has a public baths which is directly in the bay's water. It is also home to the Hazelhurst regional art gallery and a campus of the South Western Sydney Institute of TAFE. The suburb's shopping strip, Gymea Village, is home to an increasing number of outdoor cafes as well as a variety of shops. The suburb has two major primary schools, Gymea Bay and Gymea North, as well as a secondary school, Gymea Technology High School. Large quantities of students from Gymea primary schools also attend local secondary schools at Kirrawee and Port Hacking, however.
Prevalent in the area is the Gymea Lily, Doryanthes excelsa, a perennial lily with rosettes of large sword-shaped, light green leaves over a metre long. Deep blood-red flowers sprout from the end of tall woody stems up to 6m tall. This has been adopted as a symbol of the area and features on the crest of some local sporting teams, particularly the large soccer club.
