Ground Control
|
Ground Control was a real-time tactical game developed by Massive Entertainment and was at the time a forerunner in its genre, winning many industry awards. It featured 3D graphics and a free-floating camera which allowed one to zoom in and out and view the action from any angle, from a bird's eye view to the perspective of one's own assault units. The game focused on the strategy, tactics, and action over resource management.
Units in the game included various types of tanks, hover bikes, airplanes, and soldiers, delivered to the battlefield by orbital dropships. However, once in battle the player could not add any more, so proper troop selection was a key to success. Each unit type had special weapons, abilities, and armor. Players could choose to customize each unit or let the game auto-select the proper load out for each mission. The two armies were similar in overall power and no resource-gathering was necessary.
Storyline
Ground control is set in the 25th century. Mankind emerges from the devastation of the third-world war (also know as "the sixteen-minutes war") and manages to colonize several planets across the galaxy. The ancient nation-states which ruled the Earth for centuries no longer exist in the Ground Control universe. Humanity is now controlled by many different factions which continuously vie against each other. The game's plot revolves around the conflict between the Crayven Corporation (one of the many megacorporations that arose after the WWIII) and the Order of the New Dawn (an organization bent on religious motivations, and under the ideal of "purifying" the heretics) for the posession of the distant world of Krig 7-B. In the begining of the game, you take the role of the major Sarah Parker of the Crayven Corporation, as she leads the Crayven forces in order to eliminate the presence of the "Dawnies" (that's the way she refers to Order members in most of the game). Later, you assume the control of the Deacon Jarred Stone in his attempt to drive the "Crays" from the surface of Krig. During the game, however, both characters unravel a dark secret hidden within the depths of Krig 7-B. A secret that threatens all mankind...and that turns out to be the reason for such interest in what it seems to be a desolate fringe world...
