Gnjilane

Gnjilane (Serbian:Гњилане Albanian: Gjilan) is a city located in Kosovo, Serbia and Montenegro, at 42.47° North, 21.48° East.
Albanian sources claim that the history of Gnjilane dates back to 1772 and it was established by Gjinaj family (hence the name). Gjinaj family arrived in the city from the medivial town of Novo Brdo. The founder of the city is known as Bahti Beg Gjinolli. Serbs claim that its name stems from the word "putrid" in the Serbian language.
In 2003, Gjilan municipality was estimated to have 133.724 citizens, out of which 79.898 live in the urban area.
It is the administrative center of the Kosovo-Pomoravlje District of Serbia. Since February 15, 2003, Gjilan is the headquarters of the Local Democracy Agency in Kosovo of the Council of Europe.
