The Gibson L5 electric guitar was first produced in 1922 by Gibson Guitar Corporation, and has been in production ever since. It was considered the premier rhythm guitar in the big band era.
The L5 was Gibson's first guitar with f-holes. The L5 body width is 17 inches compared with 18 inches for the larger Super 400.
Wes Montgomery is the historically major guitarist commonly associated with the L5. Contemporary guitarists who play or have played a L5 include Tuck Andress from the Tuck and Patti duo and Pat Martino.
