Georgy Girl is a 1966 British film, based on a novel by Margaret Forster.
The film was directed by Silvio Narizzano and starred Lynn Redgrave as Georgy. It also starred Alan Bates, James Mason and Charlotte Rampling.
Georgy (Lynn Redgrave) is a 22-year-old woman of low class, who has never been much of an attraction for men. She is homely, badly-dressed, and incredibly naïve on the subjects of love and how to win men's affections; despite these, she has good moral character. Her parents are employed by a childless, widowed business man named James Leamington (James Mason). Leamington has watched Georgy grow up and had began to think of her as a "daughter". However, after his wife dies, he decides that he wants her as his mistress. Tired of Leamington making passes at her, Georgy becomes the roommate of her best friend Meredith (Charlotte Rampling). Meredith, the girlfriend of Jos (Alan Bates), is a pretty, sexy woman who is very vain and only cares about having parties and sex. One day, Meredith finds out that she is pregnant; she marries Jos and he moves in with the two girls. Jos suddenly finds himself attracted to Georgy and begins having an affair with her. Meredith, eventually, gives birth to a daughter named Sara; however, she couldn't care less about the baby and announces her plans to put poor baby Sara up for adoption and divorce Jos. Georgy finds herself working as a free "nanny" for baby Sara. Then, feeling that she has no time for company of the opposite sex, she dumps Jos (especially since Jos got fired from his job and proved that he's not a suitable father). James approaches Georgy with a marriage proposal and Georgy (surprisingly) accepts. They get married (with the baby joining them on their honeymoon) and adopt baby Sara.
The title song was a number one hit for Australian group, The Seekers.
