Galactic Conquest

Galactic Conquest is an unofficial Star Wars-based mod for the popular first-person shooter computer game Battlefield 1942.

The mod incorporates all-new maps based on various known locations in the Star Wars universe. The Rebels fight the Imperials, using a variety of laser blasters, starfighters, and ground vehicles.

Although still rather glitchy in many areas of physics and realism, the Galactic Conquest mod is popular among fans because it provides a less hero-centric game experience than many official Star Wars titles. As far as Mods go, its major accomplishments include the creation of accurate vehicles matching exactly or at least in line with those found in the movies, and the inclusion of space battles.

The space missions are of particular note because of how the creators got around a lot of limitations in the game engine which were meant for strictly terrestrial battle. Space is filled with a grid above and below, raning when a player has gone "too high" or "too low, which under normal gaming circumstances could result in loss of fighter control or plowing into the water respectively. The large capital ships "float" between these grids, and "fly" much like submarines in the game. The capital ships have multiple gun ports, encouraging teamwork to protect the ship, and fighter bays, from which players can launch into fighters and dogfight.

"Falling out" of the ship can occur, and players who do "fall" until they hit the invisible water in space. Particularly unlucky members may survive the fall, and are stuck in the water until they drown.

The terrestrial maps are more in line with the standard gameplay of Battlefield, but may include snowspeeders, landspeeders, Imperial Walkers, and the Millennium Falcon.

Known Major Glitches

Version .2-.3 Bugs

  • On the Death Star level, many players on the Rebel side are confused by a game glitch which causes them to lose control and likely crash as soon as they take off in their fighters. The game designers placed the Rebel spawn platform high above the Death Star, so high, that the game's automatic "realism" interferes. The game is designed so that fighters who fly too high stall out and lose control after reaching a certain point. The platform is above this point, so as soon as pilots take off, they are under this influence. The key is to just let the craft fall without powering the engines, until the pilot notices he/she has regained control.
  • In Capital Ships, players may get stuck on the ladders. Climb to the bottom, then hit the jump button to let go.
  • If a pilot of a capital ship spins the ship around too fast, all his crew may fly through the walls and fall out.
  • If a Capital ship "sinks" below the water, everyone who spawns in the ship will "float" and likely be thrown out of the ship.
