Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs were influential bluegrass musicians during the 1950s and 1960s.
The two met as members of Bill Monroe's band. They both left that band early in 1948, and within a few months had formed their own group, the Foggy Mountain Boys. Scruggs' banjo style and Flatt's vocals gave them a distinctive sound that won them many fans. In 1955 they became members of the Grand Ole Opry. The two split in 1969, each going on to lead his own group. Flatt died in 1979, while Scruggs is still living.
Notable songs:
- Foggy Mountain Breakdown - an instrumental used in many rural car chase movie sequences, notably in Bonnie and Clyde.
They did the theme song for and occasionally in the early years appeared as themselves as guest stars on the Beverly Hillbillies television series (the theme song itself reaching #42 on the record charts in the series' debut season of 1962). They also created the Martha White commercial song still used today.
