Final Fantasy VII terms

A list of major terms, persons and places in Final Fantasy VII.

  • Aeris Gainsborough: a flower-seller, and the last of the Ancients. Daughter of Prof. Gast and Ifalna. Her first boyfriend was Zack. Shinra seeks her out, hoping to use her to find the Promised Land, but Cloud protects her (in exchange for one date). She possesses a Materia that she initially believes to be useless; she later discovers that it is the White Materia, otherwise known as Holy. Immediately upon using it, she is killed by Sephiroth. (There is no way to prevent her death or to bring her back. Though a large portion of the fandom believes that Aeris was originally meant to be resurrected but was not due to time restrictions on the part of the developers, interviews with Square employees suggest that Aeris' death, though implemented late in the game's development, was always meant to be permanent.) At the end of the game, her spirit destroys Meteor using the entire Lifestream of the Planet (an analogy of Gaea). It is believed by some that in the original Japanese version of the game, her name is spelled "Aerith," however, as the Japanese language has no "th" sound, this is incorrect.
  • Ancients: an, appropriately enough, ancient race of otherworldly nomads calling themselves the Cetra; they seek out the Promised Land. They cultivated the Planet's life energy, and fought and defeated the alien Jenova. Later, some Ancients settled on the Planet and became the ancestors of the normal race of humanity. Aeris is the last surviving Ancient.
  • AVALANCHE: A group of Midgar-based anti-Shinra freedom fighters, though referred to as terrorists by Shinra. Cloud joined at the beginning of the game, when they bomb Mako Reactor No. 1, inadvertently killing many people in the explosion and alerting Shinra to their presence. Wedge, Biggs and Jessie are the other members of AVALANCHE {as FF7 is concerned}; their headquarters is in the basement of Tifa's 7th Heaven bar in the Slums. Later, Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie are killed and the headquarters destroyed when Tseng collapses part of the city's upper plate on them.
  • Barret: Current leader of AVALANCHE. Originally from Corel, he lost a forearm when Shinra attacked the town; he had the lost limb replaced with a gun & joined AVALANCHE. His friend Dyne had the same procedure done, as Dyne also lost an arm in that incident. Dyne went insane and spent the rest of his days in the Desert Prison beneath the Golden Saucer, until Barret showed up. Dyne attacked Barret, who then killed him in self-defense. Barret is the adoptive father of Dyne's daughter Marlene. {At the Gold Saucer, Barrett may go on a "date" with Cloud if Cloud has gotten both Aeris and Tifa mad and if Yuffie has not joined the party.}
  • Black Materia: the super-condensed form of the Temple of the Ancients, and the ultimate destructive Materia; it summons Meteor. Cloud gives it to Sephiroth, then the party goes to stop him. They regain the Black Materia after chasing him down and defeating him, but Cloud once again hands the Materia over to Sephiroth, who then summons Meteor.
  • Bugenhagen: spiritual leader of Cosmo Canyon and adoptive grandfather of Red XIII. He is possibly the world's greatest scholar on matters regarding the Planet, and shows Cloud and his friends that Shinra's use of Mako Reactors is depleting the Lifestream. He is 130 years old and doesn't use his legs (if he even still has them); he levitates by means of magic or a small personal hovercraft.
  • Cait Sith: an animated stuffed animal in the likeness of a cat riding a giant moogle; his weapon of choice is a magical megaphone. The Cait Sith body is remotely controlled by Shinra's Head of Urban Development, Reeve. Cait Sith betrays the party by stealing the Keystone and turning it over to the Shinra, but later turns on his employers. At least one backup copy of the Cait Sith body is known to exist; the original is destroyed in the process of transforming the Temple of the Ancients into the Black Materia.
  • Cetra: the true term for the Ancients.
  • Cid Highwind: one of the best pilots Shinra has ever known. He was supposed to be the first man in space, but due to complications on the launch day, it was delayed for six months. During that time, Shinra scrapped the project, leaving the Shinra No. 26 leaning on its platform. A town later formed around the launch site. He joins Cloud's party when Shinra President Rufus tries to steal his plane, the Tiny Bronco. Later, he achieves his dream of entering outer space when the rocket is recommissioned as the delivery mechanism for a Materia bomb intended to destroy Meteor. He lives with Shera, whose excessive caution was responsible for the failure of the rocket's first launch; on its launch against Meteor, he discovers that had she not been so cautious, the rocket would have blown up. Cid fights with a long spear, and makes many jumping, charging and airborne attacks with it.
  • City of the Ancients: the last known home of the Ancients. Underneath it is a shrine to the Planet where Aeris uses the White Materia and is subsequently killed by Sephiroth. Cloud returns here with Bugenhagen; they learn that Aeris was successful in summoning Holy.
  • Cloud Strife: the protagonist, visually notable for his extremely spiky blond hair and MASSIVE broadsword (it's as long as he is tall, no exaggeration), the Buster Sword. Born in Nibelheim, where in his youth he became smitten with Tifa Lockhart. Although Cloud claims to be a former member of SOLDIER, he was simply a regular soldier in the employ of Shinra; he deluded himself due to his need to prove himself to Tifa. He adopted some of Zack's traits after their encounter with Sephiroth in Nibelheim five years ago. After this incident, he was given some of Jenova's cells by Hojo as part of the attempt to clone Sephiroth. (Sephiroth claims that the Cloud who is in AVALANCHE is not the same Cloud from Tifa's childhood; this Cloud is, he says, a clone who patterned himself after Tifa's memories. Although this is thoroughly disproven when Tifa enters Cloud's memories in the Lifestream, many players remain confused by the mass of contradictory claims by various sources in the game.)
  • Cosmo Canyon: the name of both a canyon and a village in said canyon; it is home to Red XIII and Bugenhagen and various other scholars of the Planet.
  • Corel: the original home of Barret, Dyne and Marlene; it was destroyed by Shinra when the inhabitants opposed the building of the Mako Reactor. The survivors relocated to North Corel, and the original town became the Desert Prison.
  • Costa Del Sol: a seaside resort town, located across the sea from Junon.
  • Desert Prison: the prison underneath the Gold Saucer, inaccessible except via dune buggy or chocobo-driven wagon. The site of the original town of Corel.
  • Don Corneo: a crimelord/womanizer in Midgar's slums who was once employed by Shinra to infiltrate the slums to get to AVALANCHE. Tifa enters his hideout to obtain information, knowing that she may be selected to be his "bride" that night. In order to get into the fortress to save her, Aeris dresses Cloud up as a woman, and the three then compete for Corneo's interest. Afterwards, Corneo flees to Wutai, where he kidnaps Yuffie and Elena; Reno kills him afterwards.
  • Dr. Gast: a scientist in the employ of Shinra who fell in love with and married his research project, Ifalna. Aeris is their daughter. He was killed by Hojo and Shinra soldiers when he tried to keep them from his wife and daughter. His research on Jenova and the Ancients was continued by Hojo, although (according to Sephiroth) Dr. Gast was the more skilled of the two.
  • Dyne: a friend of Barret Wallace in Corel, and father of Marlene. He was the main voice of dissent in the town against Shinra's Mako Reactor. When Shinra attacked the town, he and Barret both lost a forearm each, and both had them replaced with guns; Dyne was driven mad and eventually sent to the Desert Prison. There, he attacks Barret and subsequently commits suicide after he finds out his daughter is still alive.
  • Elena: one of the Turks, partnered with Rude and Reno after the latter is temporarily incapacitated. A young blonde, she is impetuous and temperamental. She has a crush on Tseng, and blames Cloud for his eventual death; she often has to be talked out of acting rashly by Rude. On an optional mission, Don Corneo kidnaps both her and Yuffie.
  • Gold Saucer: a Shinra-run theme park, built in the shape of several golden saucers mounted over a desert. Cloud first meets Cait Sith here, and several rare and unique items (including the Keystone to the Temple of the Ancients) are obtained here. Those who commit crimes here are exiled to the Desert Prison.
  • Highwind: Shinra's airship; it is eventually stolen and piloted by Cid so that Cloud's party can use it.
  • Hojo: a scientist working for Shinra, former pupil of Dr. Gast. He fathered Sephiroth with Lucrecia, and then injected the unborn Sephiroth with Jenova cells, hoping to create a superhuman entity. Hojo also experimented on his rival for Lucrecia's love, Vincent. He later followed up on Dr. Gast's work on Jenova and the Ancients by attempting to clone Sephiroth. Upon learning that the only one of his experiments to succeed was Cloud--whom he had deemed a failure--he went mad. He injected himself with Jenova cells and transformed into a bizarre lifeform to fight the heroes in their raid of Midgar, where he was killed.
  • Holy: the White Materia; also the magic unleashed by that Materia. It is capable of destroying any threat to the Planet, but "threat" is interpreted by the Planet itself - meaning that anything "bad" for the Planet is destroyed, including, perhaps, the humans. At the end of the game, Holy is unleashed to combat Meteor, which is descending on the city of Midgar. Although Holy seemed to have the ability to stop meteor, Red XIII made a point of saying that it was having the reverse affect and aiding Meteor. It could have been overpowered and subverted by Meteor, or it could have been doing what it was supposed to; it is still uncertain what Holy was doing. The lifestream rushes to the place and seems to destroy the meteor. Aeris' face appears just afterwards, perhaps she was the one guiding the lifestream.
  • Huge Materia: a large Materia generated at the heart of a Mako Reactor. Four of them exist, each of which is tuned to a certain color of Materia. Shinra attempts to use them as weapons against Meteor. Cloud attempts to use it as a weapon against Sephiroth. They are also known for being able to give out 'Master Materia' for Green, Red and Yellow materia types.
  • Icicle Inn: an arctic resort town near the Northern Crater; due to the nature of the Crater, it is always winter here. Dr. Gast and Ifalna lived here.
  • Ifalna: Aeris's mother, wife and research project of Dr. Gast. The last surviving Ancient until Aeris was born. She and her husband were attacked by Hojo and Shinra soldiers. She escapes with Aeris to Midgar, but dies there leaving Aeris to be taken in by Elmyra.
  • Jenova: an alien organism, erroneously believed to be an "Ancient." It landed on Planet millennia ago, prompting the creation of Weapon; the Ancients defeated and imprisoned it, but it was uncovered by Shinra and, along with Ifalna, researched by Dr. Gast. Hojo used its DNA to create and subsequently clone Sephiroth. Sephiroth found it in Nibelheim five years ago, and used its regenerative body to create several monsters. Jenova's cells are drawn to one another, so that Jenova can reform itself; Sephiroth and his clones (including Cloud) are drawn to this Reunion.
  • Junon: a port town, home to a colossal Materia cannon and an underwater Mako Reactor. The town was attacked by Sapphire Weapon soon after the Jenova Reunion. The cannon is later relocated to Midgar in an attempt to destroy both Weapon and Sephiroth.
  • Kalm: a village near Midgar where Cloud initially reveals (his recollection of) Sephiroth's destruction of Nibelheim.
  • Keystone: the magical stone that unlocks the entrance to the Temple of the Ancients; Cloud earns it from the owner of the Gold Saucer, only for it to be stolen by Cait Sith and given to Tseng. Tseng uses it, unlocking the Temple, but is then killed by Sephiroth.
  • Knights of the Round: the most powerful summoning Materia, which summons King Arthur and twelve of his knights. Because the amount of damage that a single attack can do is limited to 9,999, the best attack techniques for the end-game are those, such as Knights of the Round, that hit lots and lots of times. It can only be obtained by using a rare golden chocobo.
  • Lifestream: also known as Spirit Energy or Mako Energy. A substance that contains the essence of the Planet and also the memories, emotions and knowledge of all who have lived on the Planet. When a new life is created, supposedly some of the Lifestream is used to create it. When a life is destroyed, that energy returns to the Planet. Because the Lifestream is responsible for creating all living things, when it is depleted, sections of the Planet become barren. Mako Reactors "refine" the Lifestream into electricity, thus slowly sapping away the Planet's strength. Materia are created when Lifestream condenses - they are a by-product of Mako reactors, though occasionally they occur naturally. The Lifestream is credited for saving the world from Meteor because Holy could not (or would not).
  • Lucrecia: Sephiroth's mother, lover of Hojo and former lover of Vincent; while she was pregnant, Hojo injected Jenova's cells into the unborn Sephiroth. Vincent believed her dead, and upon discovering otherwise allowed her to believe that Sephiroth had also died.
  • Mako A fictional ethereal "substance." Electric energy can be refined from it with a Mako Reactor. Mako seems to be somewhat radioactive, and it can be toxic. It can contaminate living beings, and in excess it can cause mutations. In the game, there's also a powerful type of cannon that fired Mako, entitled Mako Cannon. The cannon was used to destroy a forcefield around the Northern Crater, where Sephiroth resided. See also: Lifestream
  • Mako Poisoning: The effects of being in contact with the Lifestream for an extended period of time. Cloud fell into the Lifestream, and lost his identity among the thousands contained within the Lifestream itself - until Tifa came and saved him.
  • Marlene: Dyne's daughter, later adopted by Barret after Dyne's apparent death. She doesn't remember Dyne, as he was thought dead when she was only an infant. She is given into the custody of Aeris's adoptive mother, Elmyra, for protection, but both were taken hostage by Shinra as a method of controlling AVALANCHE. Reeve, a.k.a. Cait Sith, later frees them.
  • Materia: magical stones made of condensed Lifestream. They are a by-product of Mako reactors, but they also occasionally occur in nature. The naturally-created Materia tend to be more powerful than those artificially produced in Mako reactors. When equipped, they grant the use of various magical spells and other abilities. The Black Materia and White Materia are the ultimate destructive and protective Materia, respectively, though White Materia is believed to be able to rid the world of all things bad to the Planet including humanity.
  • Meteor: the massive, moon-sized magical object summoned by the Black Materia. It is intended to collide with the Planet, deeply wounding the Planet. Lifestream is used to heal the wounds of the planet; therefore, a huge amount of Lifestream would collect at the impact point. Sephiroth planned to merge with all the Lifestream gathered there and become a "god."
  • Mideel: a village near some hot springs where Cloud is found after falling into the Lifestream during the Jenova Reunion. Later, Lifestream wells up and sinks most of the town during an attack by Weapon; Cloud and Tifa are immersed in the Lifestream at this point, causing Cloud to come to grips with his identity.
  • Midgar: the city ruled by Shinra, a technopolis dominated by eight Mako Reactors. The presence of so many Reactors makes it impossible for plant life to grow for miles; only in Aeris's church will flowers grow in Midgar. Midgar is divided into a lower section (the Slums, which are subdivided into eight Sectors) and an upper plate, which blocks out the sun to those in the Slums. AVALANCHE is based in the slums, and Aeris and her adoptive mother live there. The Junon Cannon is relocated here in a last-ditch attempt to destroy both Weapon and Sephiroth. In the end, the city is returned to a verdant state by Holy and 500 years of supposedly lying fallow.
  • Mount Nibel: the mountain overlooking Nibelheim. A Mako Reactor is located here. Jenova was once housed here as well, along with several other experiments of Hojo's.
  • Nibelheim: A town located on the western continent, north of Cosmo Canyon Area and south of Rocket Town. Hometown of Cloud and Tifa. Places of interest: Cloud's House, Tifa's House, Shinra Mansion, path to Mt. Nibel. A main event occurs here in the story involving Cloud, Tifa, and Sephiroth in the past. The personal final fantasy of Cloud pertains much to this event.
  • North Corel: the poverty-stricken home of the survivors of Corel, and the only place where a transport to the Gold Saucer exists.
  • Northern Crater: the spot where Jenova caused a large wound to the Planet, and where Jenova itself was discovered, thousands of years later. Thought to be the Promised Land by the Shinra, due to the large amounts of Lifestream and Materia there being used to heal the land. Sephiroth conceals himself in the Crater after the Jenova Reunion until Cloud and the party finally defeat him.
  • Promised Land: the place which the nomadic Ancients were constantly seeking. Aeris tells Cloud that the Promised Land may not be a specific place, but Shinra believe otherwise and wish to use her to find this place, which they believe to have a limitless supply of Mako energy. Sephiroth is also believed to be seeking this place as well. When they arrive at the Northern Crater, Rufus and Hojo believe it to be the Promised Land due to its treasure trove of natural Materia. Whether or not the Crater was in fact the Promised Land, or whether the Promised Land actually existed in the physical world is uncertain.
  • Red XIII: an extremely intelligent lion-like creature from Cosmo Canyon who was experimented upon and given the name "Red XIII" by Hojo. His original name is Nanaki. He is freed by AVALANCHE when they infiltrate Shinra Headquarters to free Aeris. Red XIII's species is extremely long-lived; Red XIII is the only character (along with his possible offspring) from the game seen in the "500 Years Later" cutscene that plays after the credits end.
  • Reeve: Head of Shinra Inc's Urban Development Division. Responsible for designing most of Midgar, Reeve cares about the city and the people who live in it, an unusual trait for a Shinra official. He remotely controls the playable character Cait Sith, initially spying on the heroes' party on behalf of Shinra. However, Reeve later turns against the company and Cait Sith joins the party. He is eventually captured by his colleagues, but the others come to his rescue.
  • Reno: one of the Turks; partner of Rude and, later, Elena. He often serves as voice of reason to counter Elena's impulsiveness, and at several points allows Cloud and his party to go free without a fight.
  • Rocket Town: the town built around Shinra's aborted space mission; Cid was the captain and pilot of the rocket known as Shinra No. 26, but it never launched. The rocket is later used as the delivery mechanism for a weapon against Meteor.
  • Rude: one of the Turks; partner of Reno and, later, Elena. A bald, stoic man who says very little and usually follows Reno or Tseng's lead.
  • Rufus: originally Vice-President of Shinra, and son of its President; he takes over after Sephiroth kills his father. "Shinra" may actually be his family's name. He appears to be killed during Diamond Weapon's attack on Midgar.
  • Sephiroth: the son of Hojo and Lucrecia; he believes himself to be the son of Jenova, who, to his mind, was an Ancient, though in fact Hojo injected Jenova's cells into him while he was in Lucretia's womb. Sephiroth wields a massive six-foot long sword called the Masamune, which only he can wield. He was the greatest member of SOLDIER until the mission to Nibelheim five years ago with Cloud and Zack. There, he learned of his true origins, went insane, and burned Nibelheim to the ground, killing both Cloud's and Tifa's families in the process. Then, at the reactor, he slashed Tifa, near-fatally wounded Zack, took Jenova's head, then attempted to walk out of the reactor. Cloud attempted to stop him, but Sephiroth ran him through and lifted his impaled body into the air. Cloud was inexplicably able to get back onto the ground and throw both Sephiroth and his sword into the reactor's core. After the incident, Hojo attempted to clone Sephiroth by injecting a number of people (including Cloud) with both Jenova's and Sephiroth's cells. Sephiroth resurfaces, alive, during the early part of the game where he kills the president of Shinra and disappears with Jenova's body. Sephiroth is instrumental in orchestrating the Jenova Reunion, in which all of the "clones" gather at the Northern Crater; one of them, Cloud, gives him the Black Materia there. He then summons Meteor, intending to absorb the energy that the Planet would use to heal itself and thus become a god. He is ultimately killed by Cloud and his allies (If a player were to cheat during the game, there is a built in program that makes the final battle much more difficult than it would be if the player did not cheat).
  • Shera: an engineer in Rocket Town who delayed and essentially canceled the rocket's original launch by remaining in the rocket to check its oxygen tanks (Cid was forced to abort the launch, or she would have been fried); Cid blamed her for the loss of his dream of space travel, and now she lives with him out of obligation, taking his verbal abuse in stride. During the rocket's launch against Meteor, it is revealed that her initial concerns about the rocket's safety were correct, and, had she left the tank room as ordered, the rocket would have just blown up.
  • Shinra, Inc. (also Shin-Ra): the megalomaniacal, monopolistic energy corporation that rules Midgar, Junon, the Gold Saucer and essentially dominates the rest of the world. Shinra uses Mako Reactors to produce electricity, indifferent to the fact that the Mako they use is actually the Lifestream - the lifeblood of the planet. Shinra has its own military, the elite branch of which is known as SOLDIER. The scouts for the SOLDIER program are known as the Turks, however, the Turks also do all of Shinra's dirty work - espionage, kidnapping, murder, etc. Dr. Gast and Hojo were scientists in its very advanced yet immoral science department. Hojo and Gast both studied the Ancients, their work (Hojo's in particular) directly leading to the production of Sephiroth. By the end of the game, Shinra has been decimated and all of its executives have either defected or been killed.
  • SOLDIER: Shinra's elite military branch. Zack and Sephiroth are former members; Cloud also claims to have been in SOLDIER, though this is not entirely true. Members of SOLDIER are infused with Mako energy, giving their eyes a strange green glow ("Mako eyes"). Cloud was experimented on by Hojo, and subjected to some of the same treatments as SOLDIER members, so his eyes are also seen as "Mako eyes."
  • Temple of the Ancients: the place where the Ancients kept the Black Materia; in truth, the Temple itself is the Black Materia. Cait Sith sacrifices himself (or rather, his current "body") to collapse the Temple so that the party may take it and protect it from Sephiroth.
  • Tifa Lockhart: martial artist, bartender at the 7th Heaven bar in the MidgarSlums, childhood friend of Cloud in Nibelheim, and member of AVALANCHE. Tifa often serves as voice of reason between Barret and Cloud. Her mother died during her childhood, and her father was killed by Sephiroth five years ago. At the Gold Saucer she may go on a date with Cloud, if he has ignored or offended Aeris. Later in the game she becomes romantically involved with Cloud.
  • Tiny Bronco: Cid's airplane; after being damaged by Shinra in an escape from Rocket Town, it can only be used for shallow nautical travel.
  • Tseng: The current leader of the Turks, he deeply respected the prevoius leader, Verd, & is struggled to become a perfectionist like him. His co-workers believe that he is infatuated with Aeris, the Ancient whom the Turks have been chasing for quite some time, while Elena (the newest member of the Turks) is entirely taken with him. He kidnaps Aeris and is responsible for the deaths of several AVALANCHE members (Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie) and most of the inhabitants of Midgar's Sector 7 Slums. He is given the Keystone to the Temple of the Ancients by Cait Sith; once he uses it, Sephiroth kills him, an action which Elena blames on Cloud.
  • Turks: Shinra's elite spies, assassins and kidnappers. Their members include Reno, Rude and Tseng, and in the past included Vincent Valentine & Verd{The previous leader}. Cloud first encounters them while trying to save the slums from destruction. They kidnap Aeris so Shinra can continue experimenting with her. After Reno's first battle with Cloud's party, Elena is recruited. The Turks maintain a grudging respect for Cloud and his allies. Tseng is eventually killed by Sephiroth. Near the game's end, the player is given the option of not fighting the Turks any more, in which case they quit Shinra entirely; if the player does fight them (and wins), the Turks are killed.
  • Vincent Valentine: a former member of the Turks and lover of Lucrecia. He was shot and later experimented on by Hojo. He was imprisoned in Shinra Mansion in Nibelheim; he gains demonic powers from Hojo's experiments and becomes almost immortal. Vincent, like Yuffie, is an optional party member, and whether or not the player recruits him does not affect the central plotline, though some facts may be missed.
  • WEAPON: five towering monsters which sprang fully formed from the Planet's Lifestream when it was threatened by Jenova. The Weapons are released again to combat Shinra, Sephiroth, and ultimately Meteor. The five Weapons are (in increasing order of power) Sapphire Weapon, Diamond Weapon, Ultimate Weapon, Ruby Weapon and Emerald Weapon. (The latter two are only present in the American version of the game; they have over one million hit points each.)
  • White Materia: the ultimate protective Materia; it summons Holy to save the Planet by wiping out anything that could harm it, possibly even humanity. Aeris possesses it, though she initially believes it to have no function until the Ancients' voices in the Temple of the Ancients tell her how to use it. She activates it in the City of the Ancients, but is subsequently murdered by Sephiroth.
  • Wutai: Yuffie's home town; it lost a war with Shinra and has since been nothing but a tourist town, leading Yuffie to steal Materia to boost her home town's power. Don Corneo relocates here and kidnaps both Yuffie and Elena.
  • Yuffie Kisaragi: an impulsive, kleptomaniacal ninja who is obsessed with Materia. She wields an oversized shuriken. Yuffie, like Vincent, is an optional party member; if she is present, Cloud may go on a date with her at the Gold Saucer, assuming he has offended both Aeris and Tifa. During an optional mission in Wutai, her home town, she steals the party's Materia and is then kidnapped by Don Corneo. She gives the materia back after the party saves her. She also becomes a true acknowledged citizen of Wutai when she conquests the Pagoda and the five powers of Wutai inside.
  • Zack: Aeris's first boyfriend, originally from Gongaga, and a member of SOLDIER (rank First Class). Both he and Cloud were present when Sephiroth burned Nibelheim and took Jenova from the reactor; both were wounded by Sephiroth, who was apparently killed by Cloud. The pair were then taken to the Shinra Mansion in Nibelheim and used in Hojo's Sephiroth-cloning project; both were deemed failures, and Zack was shot down by the Shinra military during the two's escape. Cloud took Zack's weapon, the Buster Sword, and patterned his fractured personality around what he knew of Zack's life.
