Fanta is a soft drink currently produced by the Coca-Cola company. It was originally invented by Max Keith in Germany in 1940 when World War II made it difficult to get the Coca-Cola syrup to Nazi Germany. Fanta was originally made from byproducts of cheese and jam production. The name comes from the German word for imagination (Fantasie or Phantasie), because the inventors thought that imagination was needed to taste oranges from the strange mix. After World War II, Fanta was picked up by the main company and in 1960 they bought the trademark. Fanta Orange is the most popular Fanta flavor, but there are several other citrus and fruit flavors such as apple, strawberry, pineapple, and grape. A diet edition of Fanta Orange also exists in some countries. Fanta is available in over 180 countries.
Fanta Orange is more popular in Europe than the United States, and the products are formulated differently, with the European version having real orange juice.
There are over 70 flavours world-wide, however most of them are only available locally, in some countries. For example, in Romania, there is "Fanta Shokata", based on the traditional Romanian drink "Socată" made from elderflower.

Advertising
In 2004, the Coca-Cola company relabeled what had been known as Minute Maid in the United States and began an aggressive advertising campaign to expand the U.S. market for Fanta, especially among younger consumers. Their spokesgirls are The Fantanas, whose tagline is Don't You Wanta Fanta? The Fantanas have names like 'Sasha' and 'Capri' Along with traditional television and print advertisements, Fanta has been aggressively marketed in movie trailers targeted at teenage audiences.

Fanta Light (available in Orange and Lemon) is being phased out in the UK, along with all of Coca Cola's other "Light" products — that is, Sprite Lite, Lilt Light, etc. Over the summer, they will be replaced by Z (zero) products—that is, Fanta Z, Sprite Z, etc., which will include Zero added sugar. Only Diet Coke will survive and will be accompanied by the new Coca Cola Zero. All of Coca Cola's original products remain unaffected. Both Sprite Z and Fanta Z will also be available to buy at McDonalds.
