Cultural Christians
|
Cultural Christian is a term for Christians, who were raised in a Christian community, but do not follow the Christian religion. It is usually used in a negative sense 'cultural Christian' is often a term to describe someone whos understanding of Christianity is seen as underdeveloped, relative to a conceptual reference.
Comparing this term to others, as with the term "ethnic Jews," relative to "religious Jews," which denotes an important and common distinction between Jews. "Cultural Christians" is less common term, but as with Judaism, the terms use can be viewed as a distinction between one who holds faith, and one who does not. Though there is much allowable variance in terms of belief; the faithful can come by different paths to the faith, and hold very different views within. There is no term, "ethnic Christian," because Christianity is a universalist religion, meaning it trancends ethnic boundaries (i.e. geneaology, conversion rituals, food restrictions, etc.) characterised by its predecessor, Judaism.
