Energie Cottbus is a German soccer club, promoted to the Bundesliga in 2000. A key player was Vasile Miriuta, an imaginative midfield player who almost by himself was responsible for promotion. Cottbus played three seasons on the highest level, before being relegated at the end of 2002–2003 season. In the following year they narrowly missed out on immediate repromotion, when they came fourth behind FSV Mainz 05 only on goal difference. Until 2004 they were trained by former East Germany coach Eduard Geyer, who was sacked in November of 2004 when Cottbus had dropped to last place in the Second Bundesliga.
