Eljigidei
|
Eljigidei was a Mongol commander in Persia, fl. (1240-1251/2)
Eljigidei was given command over the Mongol domains in Persia, replacing Baiju, by the new khan Güyük in 1246. Supposedly with Christian sympathies like the khan, Eljigidei was ordered to advance into Syria, and planned an advance on Baghdad, the latter, hopefully, in alliance with Louis IX of France, coinciding with the Seventh Crusade. However, Güyük's early death, caused by drink, made Eljigidei postpone operations until after the interregnum.
Eljigidei's children, however, were implicated in the aborted conspiracy to declare the election of the new khan Möngke invalid and overthrow him, and he, though supposedly innocent, was arrested and put to death as well, in 1251 or 1252. After this, Baiju was returned to command.
