Dutthagamani

Dutthagamani (died 77 BC in Anuradhapura) was king of Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka) from 101 to 77 BC.
He was the elder son of a petty Sinhalese king in southeast Ceylon, and had great ambitions to oust the Tamils from the northern part of the island. He was able to convince ten young chiefs to join his plan, but his father disapproved and had him imprisoned. He later escaped and hid in exile until his father died. He had to fight his brother, Saddha Tissa, to gain his crown, and his brother agreed to join him after being defeated in battle on two separate occasions. He marched north and killed the Tamil leader Elara and then defeated an army led by Elara's nephew Bhalluka to win control of the entire island. After his victory, he constructed the large Brazen Palace in newly conquered Anuradhapura and also began construction of a large stupa to hold Buddha's begging bowl and some of his bones, but he died before it was completed.
