The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) is part of the British Ministry of Defence. It was created from the old DERA in 2001 to take over those international collaboration, research and scientific areas that were deemed unsuitable for the to-be-privatised QinetiQ. Its status as an Executive Agency means that the Terms and Conditions of its staff are now significantly worse than those of the parent Department and DSTL has been the subject of much criticism regarding the high turnover and poor retention of its staff, particularly among its graduate intake.
It has laboratories at
- Alverstoke, Hampshire
- Bedford
- Farnborough, Hampshire
- Fort Halstead, Kent
- Malvern, Worcestershire
- Pershore, Worcestershire
- Porton Down, Wiltshire
- Portsdown West, Hampshire
- Winfrith, Dorset
It is currently consolidating to three core sites: Fort Halstead, Porton Down, and Portsdown West.
