Derek Simpson was the surprise winner of the election to General Secretary of the AEEU, and Joint General Secretary of Amicus. He beat Tony Blair's 'favourite trade unionist' - Sir Ken Jackson.
Derek was seen as the left candidate, and was backed by the broad left in the AEEU, now known as Amicus Unity Gazette.
Derek was seen as a member of the Awkward Squad when elected, but is identified with the Reclaim Labour group of trade union leaders, rather than those who want to break with the Labour Party.
