Dark Mark

The Dark Mark is a fictional symbol used in the Harry Potter book series by J. K. Rowling. It is a symbol of a skull with a serpent coming out of the mouth. The symbol is used by Lord Voldemort both in the air and on marking on the arms of his followers, the Death Eaters. The spell is used in the air by Death Eaters, using the incantation Morsmordre, every time they kill someone. The Dark Mark that is branded on each Death Eater's arm functions as a summoning device. Voldemort would touch a Dark Mark and the others would burn black. When this happened the Death Eaters were expected to apparate to Voldemort.
Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger first see the Dark Mark in chapter nine of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire when Barty Crouch Jr. steals Harry's wand and uses it to conjure the Dark Mark. Winky, Barty Crouch Sr.'s house-elf, is freed because she is at the scene when the Dark Mark is conjured.
