The Normal is the name English film editor Daniel Miller used, in 1978 for his 45rpm single T.V.O.D./Warm Leatherette (which was inspired by J.G. Ballard's novel Crash). He recorded also as Silicon Teens.
Warm Leatherette represented something new and exciting for many interested in a electronic music + beats with a D.I.Y. philosophy driving it. Miller formed Mute Records with the sole purpose of releasing his own electronic music.

Mute became a gigantic concern when Miller signed Depeche Mode, essentially a boy band + melody + electronics, which were a worldwide success in the 1980s.
An accountant, from Cadbury-Schweppes was eventually hired and Mute remained one of the last indie record labels in the United Kingdom, until it was acquired by EMI in 2002. Others like Manchester's Factory Records (see the movie 24 Hour Party People) exploded, crashed and then burned. Alan McGee's Creation Records label was eventually swallowed.
