Cowford was the original name of the city now known as Jacksonville, Florida. It was settled in 1763 by British settlers and received its name from a cattle crossing the St. Johns River at the narrowest point. The city was renamed in 1822 in honor of the first territorial governor of Florida and the future 7th U.S. President, Andrew Jackson.
