Conflict in Somalia
|
Conflict in Somalia is a computer game mod for Battlefield 1942 (2002). A total conversion, the mod has the theme of United States involvement in Somalia in the early 1990s such as written about in the novel Black Hawk Down. This a thematic category it shares with another BF mod, Black Hawk Down. Early on in the mod's development, an Alpha 0.2 version was released that is not compatible with later versions of BF (1.45, 1.5, 1.6). In July 2004, a 1.6 compatible version, the mod's first major public release, version 0.3, was released. The release was immediately followed by the 0.31 Hotfix.
The 0.31 was not successful and failed to garner many players in the weeks after its release. Plagued by a lack of servers and players the mod did not recover from a bad start despite being of a relative high quality and containing many innovative features.
Notably in one level computer controlled people could be seen doing push-ups, a first among battlefield modifications at the time. Another unique feature, albeit a more controversial one, was the lack of a HUD a aiming reticule and require the use of iron sights brought up on the weapons alternate fire. Other features included no parachutes and helicopters that would go into a spin if hit with a rocket-propelled grenade.
Keeping in line with a realism theme were helicopter controls were among the most difficult and demanding of any Battlefield modification. A long delay time between in the vertical throttle control made helicopters very difficult for a novice to fly, and demanding even for more experienced battlefield pilot. While some considered the controls a rewarding challenge, the community general received them as annoying and poorly implemented.
Weapon damage, in contradiction to many other areas of the mods desigs, had a arcade balance similar to the un-moded Battlefield 1942. Players could sustain multiple gun-shot wounds, even to the chest and continue fighting at full ability. This lead to contradictory gameplay environment, with players left to deal with more difficult realistic equipment without the benefit of realistic damage. For example, the helicopter mounted mini-guns would take a relatively long amount of time to kill which created little incentive to master difficult helicopter controls.
Despite having a large amount of content for a beta release and many unique feature's the 0.31 release these quirks which were not well received by the gaming community no doubt aided its lack of success. The popularity of Desert Combat which offered a similar gameplay theme, likely made it harder for it to garner players. As of the end of 2004 the website had not announced plans to move to newer engine or posted any news updates showing new content.
