Clipping

Clipping has several meanings:
- Coin clipping is the act of shaving off a small portion of the precious metal for profit.
- In computer graphics clipping refers to the task of making sure that only the visible part is actually drawn.
- In gardening clipping is equivalent to pruning, the practice of removing diseases, overmature or otherwise unwanted portions from a plant.
- In medicine clipping is the process of surgically applying a (titanium) clip around an aneurysm, in order to prevent further bleeding.
- Clipping is the cutting-out of articles from a paper publication.
- In linguistics clipping is the formation of a new word by shortening, e.g., alum from alumnus, cock from cockerel, or ad from advertisement.
- In telecommunication clipping is the limiting of instantaneous signal amplitudes to a predetermined maximum value.
- In telephony clipping is the loss of the initial or final parts of a word, words, or syllable, usually caused by the nonideal operation of voice-actuated devices.
- In a display device clipping is the removal of those parts of display elements that lie outside of a given boundary.
