CircleMUD

CircleMUD is a MUD codebase written by Jeremy Elson first released on July 16, 1993. It is a derivate of DikuMUD that was written in 1990 by Katja Nyboe, Tom Madsen, Hans Henrik Staerfeldt, Michael Seifert and Sebastian Hammer.
CircleMUD is known for its hack-and-slash atmosphere, strongly reminiscent of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. A vast number of MUDs running currently are based in one way or another on CircleMUD or one of its derivatives (of which there are many).
Jeremy Elson no longer runs the original CircleMUD, however, the codebase is freely available for download, albeit under a slightly restrictive end user license agreement
CircleMUD is written in the C programming language. Stock Circle contains about 40,000 lines of code- derivatives and additions such as DG scripts and Oasis OLC (both of which can be found at The Builder Academy (http://www.builderacademy.net)), can greatly expand that number.
CircleMUD maintains an active developer mailing list- subscription information can be found at the main developer site.
