Charles Willis "Chip" Pickering, Jr. (born August 10, 1963) has represented Mississippi's third Congressional district (map (http://nationalatlas.gov/printable/images/preview/congdist/ms03_109.gif)) as a Republican in the United States House of Representatives since being elected in 1996. He previously served as an United States Department of Agriculture appointee. His father is Charles Pickering, Sr., a notable judge.
Congressman Sonny Montgomery, a long-time Democratic incumbent, did not seek re-election in 1996. Pickering easily won in the conservative-leaning 3rd District that year and would continue to do so in 1998 and 2000.
In 2002, Pickering was pitted against 4th District Congressman Ronnie Shows (a Democrat) due to reapportionment that caused Mississippi to lose 1 House seat. He defeated Shows by winning over 60% of the vote in the new 3rd District. No Democrat ran against Pickering in 2004.
