Chembur started out as an industrial area, but now it is a largely residential suburb. Old bungalows and villas are now making way for high-rise apartments. Chembur has a cosmopolitan population that is dominated by maharashtrians, sindhis and south indians.
Chembur is sometimes referred to as 'gas chamber of Mumbai' because of its proximity to garbage incinerators. However, air pollution in Chembur is on the decline.
