The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights is an American civil rights group, with the mission of defending the civil and religious rights of Catholics in the United States, based on the First Amendment. Founded in 1973 by Jesuit Father Virgil C. Blum SJ, it a lay organization funded by individual donations. The Catholic League is headquartered in New York. Its efforts are coordinated by a Board of Directors under its president, William A. Donohue.
Although it is chiefly concerned with protecting the civil rights of Catholics, issuring press releases to the media, talking points to hosts of radio talk shows, organizing publicized boycotts of programming of which it disapproves, and calling press conferences to identify anti-Catholic bias in elected officials, according to its official website, the Catholic League's conservative public stances on abortion, separation of church and state, and other issues, reflecting hard-line Vatican positions, often puts it at odds with other civil rights groups such as the ACLU. The League issues a journal, Catalyst, as well as reports, such as "Pope Pius XII and the Holocaust", books/brochures and an annual Report on Anti-Catholicism.
